About Project RENEW

Established in August 2001, Project RENEW is a cooperative program between the government of Quang Tri Province and international non-governmental organizations. Its mission is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by unexploded ordnance (UXO) remaining from the war. The project’s primary partner today is Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), one of the world’s leading organizations in humanitarian disarmament.

Clearing Land for a Safer Quang Tri

NPA/RENEW prioritizes the clearance of cluster munitions and other explosive remnants of war (ERW) in rural areas, farmland, and residential communities. This program is funded by the U.S. Department of State. As of July 2025, over 619 million square meters of land have been identified as confirmed hazardous areas, with more than 42% of that land already cleared and handed back safely to local communities.

Risk Education and Victim Assistance

With support from the Government of Ireland, Project RENEW also implements risk education and victim assistance. Activities include teaching safe behavior when encountering UXO, providing prosthetic limbs and rehabilitation services for more than 3,000 persons with disabilities, and supporting sustainable livelihoods for hundreds of families.

Supporting Agent Orange Victims

Since 2022, RENEW has participated in a broader effort to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities in provinces heavily affected by Agent Orange. This initiative is funded by USAID.

A Community-Driven, Sustainable Model

RENEW’s integrated mine action model emphasizes long-term, community-driven solutions that empower local people to take ownership of the work, paving the way toward a safer and more resilient Quang Tri.
