Dong Ha, Quang Tri (July 29, 2024) — Project RENEW convened a meeting on Monday to assess the progress of its Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) project in Quang Tri and Quang Ngai provinces. Funded by Irish Aid through the Irish Embassy in Vietnam, the initiative has been crucial in protecting communities from the dangers of unexploded ordnance (UXO).

Representatives from Quang Tri and Quang Ngai provinces, including government agencies, the Red Cross, and youth organizations, gathered to discuss the project’s progress from October 2023 to July 2024 and outline future plans.

RENEW had collaborated with local partners to conduct 338 EORE sessions, reaching 38,082 individuals, including 48 disabled persons and 2,284 ethnic minorities. The project prioritized beneficiary satisfaction and experience in its activities.

RENEW’s Coordination Manager, Nguyen Hieu Trung, commended partners for their dedication and urged them to explore innovative approaches to enhance UXO safety messaging for both children and adults. He also announced additional funding of 361,502 Euros from the Irish Embassy to sustain the project’s vital work.

Quang Tri Department of Foreign Affairs Deputy Director Nguyen Van Bien, speaking on behalf of the RENEW/NPA Steering Committee, recognized Project RENEW’s comprehensive mine action model as a significant contribution to a UXO-free Vietnam.

Quang Ngai Provincial Red Cross Chairman Pham Ngoc Thanh acknowledged the immense challenge of completely clearing Vietnam of bombs. However, he emphasized that with sufficient funding, significantly enhancing public awareness of bomb and mine risks is achievable.

“We sincerely thank Project RENEW and the Government of Ireland, through the Irish Embassy in Vietnam, for your ongoing support to Quang Ngai, which has brought hope and transformation to our communities,” Thanh said. “Project RENEW’s support not only mitigates the threats posed by bombs and mines but also improves people’s lives, empowering them to build sustainable futures. This collaborative journey is filled with compassion and hope for a brighter tomorrow.”
