Dong Ha, Quang Tri (4 September 2024) — Today, two young students, Nguyen Thanh Hang, 14, and Nguyen Phuong Nhi, 12, from Dong Ha City, received a pleasant surprise. They were awarded the “Supporting Students to School” scholarship from Project RENEW, a meaningful gift from the Germany-Vietnam Friendship Association.

Hang and Nhi are sisters and the daughters of Mr. Nguyen Khac Thuong, a survivor of unexploded ordnance in Dong Le Ward, Dong Ha City. In 1989, a landmine accident left Mr. Thuong blind in one eye and significantly impaired his ability to work. As a member of the Dong Ha City Blind Association, Mr. Thuong makes incense to earn an additional income of about 2 million dong per month. Meanwhile, his wife, Ms. Phan Thi An, sells goods on her electric bicycle. On a good day, she can earn 200,000 dong. With such an unstable monthly income, Mr. Thuong’s family struggles to make ends meet.

The scholarship awarded to Hang and Nhi by Project RENEW is worth 8 million dong. Despite their family’s difficult circumstances, Hang and Nhi have always been excellent students at Phan Dinh Phung Secondary School in Dong Ha City. Both sisters particularly enjoy studying mathematics. This special gift will double their joy as they attend the school’s opening ceremony tomorrow.

Mrs. Phan Thi A, the mother of Hang and Nhi, happily shared that the scholarship will help cover the costs of buying school supplies and other fees at the beginning of the new school year. “This is also a significant motivation for our family to overcome difficulties and improve our lives,” Mrs. A said.

Project RENEW would like to thank the Germany-Vietnam Friendship Association for their meaningful gift to Hang and Nhi.
