Dong Ha, Quang Tri (28 October 2024) — A group of young students from Vĩnh Linh District recently embarked on a powerful learning experience at the Mine Action Visitor Center, managed by Project RENEW. This eye-opening field trip aimed to educate the students about the dangers of unexploded ordnance (UXO) and foster a sense of safety and vigilance.
The program, tailored for primary school students aged 9-11, provided crucial knowledge about various types of explosive devices and the devastating consequences of accidents. By learning safe behaviors and recognizing potential hazards, these young learners are becoming advocates for safety within their communities.
A highlight of the field trip was the opportunity to meet Mr. Hồ Văn Lai, a survivor of a cluster bomb attack. Despite losing limbs and an eye, Mr. Lai’s unwavering spirit serves as an inspiration. His story of resilience and determination has empowered the students to empathize with those affected by UXO and to appreciate the importance of peace.
The tragic reality of UXO continues to haunt Quảng Trị province. In the past three years, three lives have been claimed by these deadly remnants of war. The most recent incident, which occurred in Hiền Thành Commune on May 13, 2024, underscores the urgent need for continued clearance efforts and public awareness campaigns.
By empowering young people with knowledge and fostering a culture of safety, we can work towards a future free from the threat of UXO.
The Explosive Ordnance Risk Education Program of Project RENEW is funded by the Government of Ireland through the Irish Embassy in Vietnam. We would like to thank the Vĩnh Linh District Youth Union for their cooperation in successfully organizing this meaningful activity for the students.
