Quang Tri (7 March 2025) — Our clearance teams are making steady progress in Binh Minh Village, Phong Binh Commune, Gio Linh District, Quang Tri Province.

Since October 2024, NPA/RENEW’s four teams have been clearing over 1.1 million square meters of explosive-contaminated land in Binh Minh Village, Quang Tri Province.

Clearance teams use large loop detectors to search for explosive ordnance signals on the clearance site. Phong Binh, Gio Linh. 04 March 2025.

They’ve secured 988,153 square meters and destroyed 309 life-threatening hazards, including cluster munitions. On March 4, 2025, team leader Nguyen Thi Hai Van and her all-women team reached a milestone, removing their 105th cluster munition.

After signals are marked, the team member uses a handheld detector for investigation. Phong Binh, Gio Linh.

Set to conclude this month, this effort will safeguard 631 residents from explosive remnants that have killed or injured 120 villagers since the war. “We’re making this land safe for the community,” Van said.

Team leader Van records information of a cluster munition on her iPad before ordering the team to dispose it of  in situ. Phong Binh, Gio Linh. 4 March 2025.

A heartfelt thank you to the U.S. Department of State for funding this vital mission of NPA/RENEW in Quang Tri Province—once the most bombed place during the American War in Vietnam.
