June 17, 2025 – The Hai Lang Blind Center in Quang Tri Province is celebrating a transformative upgrade: a brand-new roof, replacing the old, leaking one that had long troubled its members. This vital project was made possible through a generous donation from Veterans For Peace Chapter 160 (VFP Chapter 160), bringing relief and renewed hope to the center’s 30 members, many of whom are blind or have disabilities.

The old roof, deteriorated over years of exposure, had caused significant challenges, particularly during the rainy season. Leaks disrupted daily activities and threatened the workshop where members craft incense, brooms, and bamboo products to earn independent income. For individuals like Mr. Tran Duc Loi, chairman of the Blind Center, who lost his eyesight in a bomb and mine accident in 1991, the constant worry of water damage compounded the challenges of daily life.

In October 2024, a group of American veterans, led by Mr. Chuck Searcy, co-founder of Project RENEW and president of VFP Chapter 160, visited the Hai Lang Blind Center. They were deeply moved by the resilience and determination of the members, who, with support from Project RENEW, work diligently to sustain themselves through their handicrafts. Witnessing the poor condition of the roof, the veterans committed to funding its replacement.

“Thanks to the special gift from VFP Chapter 160, our members no longer fear the rain,” said Mr. Tran Huu Loi. “This new roof has improved our daily lives and given us peace of mind to focus on our work.”

The reroofing project is a testament to the power of collaboration and compassion. It reflects Project RENEW’s ongoing mission to support vulnerable communities in Quang Tri, fostering independence and dignity for those affected by the legacies of war. The partnership with VFP Chapter 160 underscores the shared commitment to healing and rebuilding lives.

Project RENEW extends heartfelt gratitude to VFP Chapter 160 and Mr. Chuck Searcy for their generosity. This new roof is more than a physical structure—it’s a symbol of hope, security, and the enduring spirit of the Hai Lang Blind Center’s members.
