\u0110\u00f4ng Giang, Qu\u1ea3ng Tr\u1ecb \u2013 May 14, 2025<\/strong> \u2013 In a significant step toward ensuring safety for local farmers, six\u00a0RENEW\/NPA<\/span> clearance teams have been working tirelessly to make safe 250,000 m\u00b2 of farmland in Dong Giang Ward, Dong Ha City. This area, heavily impacted by unexploded ordnance (UXO) from the Vietnam War, is being cleared to support the upcoming rice planting season.<\/p>\n

Since operations began on Monday, May 12, 2025, the teams have safely found and disposed of 19 cluster bombs<\/span> and 13\u00a0other explosive devices<\/span>, including\u00a0large-caliber artillery shells<\/span>, within just three days. These efforts bring peace of mind to local farmers preparing their fields for the new crop.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis area was heavily bombed in 1972, particularly with cluster bombs,\u201d said Mr. Ho\u00e0ng Kim H\u00e1n, a local farmer gathering straw for the upcoming harvest. \u201cWe are overjoyed that the teams have safely destroyed these remnants, making our farming safer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Team leader Nguy\u1ec5n Nhu\u1eadn B\u00ecnh said that the teams aim to complete this life-saving mission within nine days, ensuring that 354 \u0110\u00f4ng Giang farmers<\/span>\u00a0receive safe land for cultivation. \u201cWe destroy cluster bombs on-site,\u201d B\u00ecnh explained. \u201cFor large-caliber explosives, we coordinate with our mobile team to transport them to a central demolition site for safe disposal.\u201d<\/p>\n

This operation is part of RENEW\/NPA’s ongoing commitment to mitigating the dangers of UXO in Qu\u1ea3ng Tr\u1ecb, one of Vietnam\u2019s most contaminated provinces. By clearing farmland, the project not only ensures safety but also supports the livelihoods of local communities. We are deeply grateful to the U.S. Department of State for their generous support, which makes this life-saving work possible.<\/p>\n
