This is an Indiegogo-based fund-raiser initiated by Anandaroopa Nam Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American currently living in Washington DC.  Working as an independent curator for London-based Asia Ink, he discovered some amazing stories that encouraged me to take action, rather than just take notes.

In December 2014,  Anandaroopa traveled with a colleague in a 4×4 SUV down the incredible Ho Chi Minh Trails from north to south in Vietnam and through southern Laos. During their visit to Project RENEW, he visited the workshop of the Blind Association in Hai Lang District, where 25 blind people are making toothpicks, brooms, and incense to generate income.

The Director of the Association requested a few more machines to create more jobs for new members. As the operator feeds a stick through the low-tech machine, it molds the incense paste to the stick. The process is not labor intensive and can be done by touch; hence, making it practical for blind or visually impaired workers.

One machine costs about $330. Each one can create several jobs paying $130 a month, a living wage in that area.  A human being, blinded by exploding UXO found 40 years after it was dropped by the American military, will benefit directly from your gift, which in turn will create follow-on benefits for these people, their families and their communities. The bottom line is that the investment is a sound one.

You can donate on INDIEGOO, and your gift will be matched 100% by a generous anonymous donor. In order to receive U.S. tax deduction, give directly through Project RENEW, at http://landmines.org.vn/get-involved/donate-now; please do earmark your donation for the Blind Association of Hai Lang.
